Course Overview
This 2-day refresher course is designed for individuals who already hold a valid First Aid at Work qualification and need to renew it before it expires. It meets the requirements of the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981 (and 1982 in Northern Ireland) and ensures that first aiders remain confident and competent in emergency situations.
When Can I Take This Refresher Course?
To be eligible, you must have a current First Aid at Work (FAW) certificate, or one that has expired within 3 months of the course start date:
✅ Within 1 month of expiry – You can attend with no extra documentation
✅ 1–3 months past expiry – You may still attend if:
- Your employer provides a letter confirming you are still competent, OR
- We assess that your recent experience qualifies you
❌ More than 3 months expired? You’ll need to retake the full 3-day course.

Duration
- 12 contact hours over 2 days
- Flexible options available, providing all training is completed within 7 weeks and each session is at least 2 hours
Certification
On successful completion of practical assessments and a written test, learners receive the FAA Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work (or SCQF Level 6 in Scotland), valid for 3 years.
Group Size
- Maximum of 12 participants per course
- Learners must be aged 14+
- You must be 16 or over to act as a workplace first aider

What You’ll Learn
This course recaps and refreshes all the core skills taught in the full FAW course, including:
- Legal responsibilities and incident reporting
- Assessing incidents and unresponsive casualties
- CPR and using an AED
- Bleeding, burns, choking and shock (including anaphylaxis)
- Fractures, head, chest, and spinal injuries
- Illnesses like heart attacks, strokes, epilepsy, asthma, diabetes
- Bandaging and treatment of minor injuries
